About the 2018
P&G Beauty Awards

This year marks the 10th Annual P&G Beauty Awards! Designed to celebrate top editorial and creative talent in the Canadian beauty industry, the P&G Beauty Awards are open to Canadian beauty media, content creators, and artists.

 

The Awards recognize work that exclusively showcases beauty content, produced in Canada.

CATEGORIES
& CRITERIA

  • Best Beauty Shoot

    Entry Criteria – A beauty  story told entirely through on-figure visuals.

    • Eligibility: Submit one (1) sample (can be one image or series of images) of the best beauty shoot (print or online) from a single issue or story.
    • Work samples should only include on-figure imagery.
    • Entry must have a beauty or grooming focus. Fashion-focused work samples will not be considered.
    • Work samples using purchased or stock photography are not eligible.

     

    Judging Criteria – judging to be based on overall visual impact
    (excludes written copy).
    One winner will be selected from all English and French entries.

    • Is the page visually arresting, does it make the reader stop?
    • Is the visual creative and innovative in its presentation?
    • Through creative direction and visuals alone, does the shoot convey a cohesive and compelling beauty story?
    • Does the makeup, nails, skin or hair artistry effectively complement the editorial creative vision?
    • Is the art direction exceptional and unique?

  • BEST BEAUTY STILL LIFE

    Entry Criteria – A beauty story told entirely through off-figure visuals

    • Eligibility: submit one (1) sample of the best still life beauty story (print, online from a single issue or story.
    • Work samples should only include off-figure visuals of beauty and / or beauty-related products including but not limited to cosmetics, hair and skincare products, beauty and grooming tools and accessories. Excludes illustrations.
    • Entry must have a beauty focus. Fashion focused work samples will not be considered.
    • Work samples using purchased or stock photography are not eligible.

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on overall visual impact
    (excludes written copy).
    One winner will be selected from all English and French entries.

    • Is the page visually arresting, does it make the reader stop?
    • Is the visual creative and innovative in its presentation?
    • Through off figure / still life visuals alone, does the entry effectively convey a cohesive and compelling beauty story?
    • Is the art direction exceptional and unique?

  • Best Beauty Service Editorial

    Entry Criteria – An informative or instructional (how-to) beauty story told using a combination of both text and visuals that provides readers with unique insight.

    • Eligibility: submit one (1) sample of the best beauty service piece or package (print, online from a single issue or story.
    • Work samples must include a combination of text and visuals
    • Must include an obvious and clear informative or instructional element for the reader
    • Entry must have a beauty focus. Fashion focused work samples will not be considered

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on quality of written content and overall visual impact. One English and one French winner will be selected.

    • Is the story presented with an informative / instructional tone? Is it clear what the reader will take away from this content
    • Is the text expertly written, demonstrating beauty subject matter expertise and sound research?
    • Does the story effectively communicate a trend or technique in a straightforward, easy-to-follow and informative manner?
    • How well do the text, images and page layout complement each other to effectively convey a compelling and instructional beauty story?

  • BEST Beauty FEATURE

    Entry Criteria – A feature story written with a focus on beauty trends, profiles or general interest topics.

    • Eligibility: submit one (1) sample of the best beauty feature (print or online) with a minimum word count of 500 words. Supporting sidebars and captions will be evaluated as part of the overall story, but the main feature must meet the minimum word count.
    • Topics can include but are not limited to: celebrity or brand spokesperson interviews or profiles, product profiles, personal essays, cultural / societal trend profiles related to beauty practices etc.
    • This category is open to all forms of written media including but not limited to magazine features, online features, blog posts/entries etc.

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on quality of written content. One English and one French winner will be selected.

    • Is this feature expertly written, demonstrating beauty subject matter expertise and sound research?
    • How engaging is this feature? Is the content relevant to the audience and readers? Does it reflect a unique point of view?
    • How original is the subject matter?
    • How well do the supporting text, images and visuals complement the story?

  • BEST Beauty INNOVATION FEATURE

    Entry Criteria – A beauty feature story written with a focus on innovation and science.

    • Eligibility: submit one (1) sample of the best beauty feature (print or online) with a minimum word count of 500 words. Supporting sidebars and captions will be evaluated as part of the overall story, but the main feature must meet the minimum word count.
    • Work sample must have a focus on beauty innovation and science.
    • Topics can include but are not limited to: product ingredients, new formula innovation, product evolution, ingredient safety, scientist interviews, anti-aging technology, clinical-based stories, product efficacy myth-busting, personal
      essays etc.
    • This category is open to all forms of written media including (but not limited to) magazine features, online features, blog posts/entries etc.

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on quality of written content. One English and one French winner will be selected.

    • Is innovation or science the core focus of the story?
    • Is the feature expertly written, demonstrating beauty subject matter expertise and sound research?
    • How engaging and educational is this feature?
    • How original is the subject matter?
    • How well do the supporting text, images and visuals complement the story?

  • Best BEAUTY site

    Entry Criteria – A website or blog with a prominent focus on beauty and lifestyle content.

    • Eligibility: Open to Canadian websites (independent and media brands).
    • Submit three (3) URL links that best represent the site, however note that the site will be judged on cohesiveness and overall appeal and judges may review additional links to the URL’s submitted.

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on the quality of written content, use and quality of images and overall user experience and cohesiveness of the website. One winner will be selected from all English and French entries.

    • How well does the blog or website deliver high quality beauty storytelling?
    •  How well do the text and site design complement each other?
    • How cohesive is the website. Do articles have the same look and feel? How well does the site navigation / functionality enhance the user experience?
    • How well does the content engage the reader?

  • Best Beauty Social Media Content – MEDIA BRAND

    Entry Criteria – Use of social media platforms to tell a beauty or grooming story.

    • Eligibility: open to independent Canadian media brands ONLY. Please note a Media Brand is defined as follows: A media publisher and/or media group that develops consistent content (both written and image/video) published to brand-owned channels, offline and online. Media Brand must have a minimum one year of publishing history to qualify in this category.
    • Submit the URL links to 5-8 posts that best represent your beauty storytelling, along with the respective handles (excluding Snapchat). However, note that judges will also analyze social channels for overall cohesiveness and general appeal and may review additional links/posts to the URL links submitted.
    • Submit the URL links to all relevant social media platforms where the media brand is present (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest). This is excluding Snapchat.
    • Posts can include any combination of content from Instagram, Instagram Stories, Twitter, Facebook (including Facebook Live), and / or Pinterest.
    • Posts can also include sponsored content.
    • All submitted posts will be evaluated for native content only. Posts that link out to other content can be submitted, however the content the post links to will not be considered in the evaluation process.
    • Social posts submitted should spark relevant conversation and engagement from fans (i.e. Instagram comments / Twitter replies relating back to the post, Facebook comments).
    • Posts submitted must have a beauty focus and social channels as a whole should have a  beauty and lifestyle focus.
    • URL links can be submitted as text in a one-page PDF document.

     

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on creativity and quality of content. One winner will be selected from all English and French entries.

    • Of the content submitted
    • How well do the text and visuals complement each other to effectively convey a compelling beauty story?
    • How appealing are the visuals? Do the images make the viewer stop? How does the written content attract the audience? Does it encourage the viewer to click out to any long-form content/associated link?
    • Of the Social Channels submitted:
    • How cohesive is the content across all social channels
    •  How well does the platform’s content inspire, inform, or educate the audience?
    • Do the entrant’s social channels tell a unique story?
    • Of the social channels submitted, does the content use an authentic, consistent voice throughout?
    • Judges will also evaluate overall production quality, defined as image quality (for photo-based posts), video quality and clarity of sound (for video based posts).

     

     

  • Best BEAUTY Social Media Content – INDEPENDENT CONTENT CREATORS

    Entry Criteria – Use of social media platforms to tell a beauty or grooming story.

    • Eligibility: open to independent Canadian social content creators ONLY.
    • Submit the URL links to five (5) posts that best represent your beauty storytelling, along with the respective handles (excluding Snapchat). For Instagram Stories, submit the downloaded file(s). Please note that judges will also analyze social channels for overall cohesiveness and general appear and may review additional links/posts to the URL links submitted.
    • Submit the URL links to all relevant social media platforms that the content creator is present (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest). Excluding Snapchat.
    • Posts can include any combination of content from Instagram, Instagram Stories, Twitter, Facebook (including Facebook Live), and / or Pinterest.
    • Posts can also include sponsored content
    • All submitted posts will be evaluated for native content only. Posts that link out to other content can be submitted, however the content the post links to will not be considered in the evaluation process,
    • Social posts submitted, should spark relevant conversation and engagement from fans (i.e. Instagram comments / Twitter replies relating back to the post, Facebook comments).
    • Posts submitted must have a beauty focus and social channels as a whole should have a heavy beauty and lifestyle focus ( a beauty-focused piece of content is posted once every seven days).
    • URL links can be submitted as text in a one-page PDF document.

     

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on creativity and quality of content. One winner will be selected from all English and French entries.

    • Of the content submitted
    • How well do the text and visuals complement each other to effectively convey a compelling beauty story?
    • How appealing are the visuals? Do the images make the viewer stop? How does the written content attract the audience? Does it encourage the viewer to click out to any long-form content/associated link?
    • Of the Social Channels submitted:
    • How cohesive is the content across all social channels?
    • How well does the platform’s content inspire, inform, or educate the audience?
    • Do the entrant’s social channels tell a unique story?
    • Of the social channels submitted, does the content use an authentic, consistent voice throughout?
    • Judges will also evaluate overall production quality, defined as image quality (for photo based posts), video quality and clarity of sound (for video based posts).

     

     

  • BEST BEAUTY VIDEO

    Entry Criteria –Beauty  video content created for a social media channel, including but not limited to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram.

    • Eligibility: Open to independent Canadian content creators and media brands.
    • Submit the URL link to one (1) beauty video that is between 1 - 10 minutes in length.
    • Video can be posted to any social media platform including but not limited to Website, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram etc.
    • Submitted video must have a focus on beauty.
    • Topics can include but are not limited to: celebrity or brand spokesperson interviews, tutorials, product profiles and reviews, behind-the-scenes stories, etc.
    • Instagram Stories are not eligible for consideration in this category.

    Judging Criteria – Judging to be based on quality of video content and overall engagement factor. One winner will be selected from all English and French entries.

    • Does the video content deliver an original beauty story in a unique voice?
    • How well does the content communicate a compelling beauty story through audio and visual content?
    • Is the content presented clearly and does it demonstrate expertise in connecting with the audience?
    • Does the content demonstrate beauty subject matter expertise?
    • How original is the video?
    • How engaging is the video? Does the video connect with the audience?
    • Will viewers have something to take away from the content/topic?
    • Judges will also evaluate overall production quality (defined as lighting quality, smoothness of editing and clarity of sound) as it relates to the appropriateness for the environment in which it was presented (i.e. Facebook Live, YouTube, Instagram etc.).

JUDGES

All entries will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges who are experts in a variety of disciplines including beauty, literature, design and social media. The jury will evaluate all submissions based on the predetermined judging criteria, selecting one winner and two finalists per category.  All decisions made by the jury are final.

 

To maintain objectivity, P&G is not involved in the judging process. Where possible, entrants (and, as applicable, the publication) will remain anonymous during the judging phase.

 

The 2018 P&G Beauty Awards jury will be announced in August.
